Climate neutrality is based on the principle of CO₂ compensation, as described in the Kyoto Protocol. This involves offsetting unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions in one location through savings via climate protection projects in another location. Companies finance this by purchasing certificates from projects in the biomass, cooking stoves, solar energy, forest protection, hydropower or wind energy sectors. Each certificate stands for a saved ton of CO₂. The initiators of these projects receive carbon credits, which can be traded as climate protection certificates.
